Tom Lane is a typographic illustrator and runs Ginger Monkey Design. He does really incredible work, like this:

ANTLER_1

He uses stationery a lot for his work so seemed like a perfect candidate for What’s In Your Pencil Case?

Tell me about how you use stationery in your day to day life?

Everything I design pretty much starts off with pencil and paper. If I try and miss this step I usually end up going around in circles. I work a lot with type, specifically hand-lettering and I use calligraphy to help inform my understanding of letterforms and play. I have a growing collection of pens and brushes that I use regularly.

What’s the top stationery item that you can’t live without (and why)?

My clutch pencil. I don’t like mess, and I need a sharp point to work on the fine details of my designs. The clutch pencil suits me to a T.

And a few quick-fire questions:

 – Pen or Pencil?
Pencil

 – Notebooks: plain, lined or grid?
Plain

 – Paper diary or phone calendar?
Phone calendar. I need the alerts to keep me on track day to today! Otherwise it would totally be Paper diary.
