Review: Blott Electric Sharpener

When they guys at Blott got in touch with me about reviewing their Electric Pencil Sharpener, although it’s not the sort of thing I usually use, I thought I’d give it a go.

First off, I love that it’s see-through. In the same way that demonstrator fountain pens are transparent so you can see how it all works inside, I like that you can see all the wires and electronic components. It’s not necessarily the coolest looking product, but I don’t know how you could make it cheaply if it wasn’t made of plastic and the transparency definitely makes up for that.

You can either use 4 x AA batteries to power it, or use a power adapter. When I first got it out I noticed that the hole for the power adapter matched my kitchen radio so I plugged it in. It made it work, but when I tried to sharpen a pencil, it spun the pencil around but it didn’t sharpen it. It was only when my boyfriend came home and pointed out that it was the wrong kind of adapter and therefore it was spinning the sharpener the wrong way, that I realised I was being an idiot and tried it out with batteries instead

And I’m so glad I did – it’s so satisfying to use! There are 2 hole sizes; 6-8mm and 9-12mm. The larger one has a safety switch too so that kids won’t be able to put their fingers down it and get hurt. And as it’s see-through, the sharpenings look great, especially if you’re using coloured pencils! Incidentally, the tray that collects the sharpenings clips out really easily and holds everything securely on your trip to the bin.

It makes a pretty perfect point. The only negative thing I can say is that it sharpens the paint of the pencil off slightly wonky – you should be able to see in the picture above that the paint is lower on the left hand side. It doesn’t bother me too much, but it may bother some. As I said before it’s SO satisfying to use! I basically sharpened every pencil I own when I took these photos (and that’s a lot!).

I think it’s really reasonably priced at £9.50 (although remember you’ll also need batteries if you don’t have the right power adapter). I guess for someone like me, who doesn’t use pencils that often, it’s probably a bit of a extravagance, especially as I really enjoy using my M+R brass pencil sharpener, but if you use pencils a lot then I think this’d definitely be worth having, or perhaps for a teacher in the classroom.

Blott also threw in a couple of their pencils for me to check out. Again, not my normal vibe, but very informative and I bet they’d be really useful if you’re in school!

Disclaimer: Blott sent me these products free of charge for the purposes of this review, but I have done my very best to talk about them honestly.
