Until a few days ago, I’d never really thought about this before, but I noticed I have a very definite way in which I use notebooks. I’m going to name it the Mullet technique, i.e. business in the front, party in the back. When I say party though, I kind of just mean messy…
I have 2 main notebooks on the go at the moment and it’s exactly the same for both.
My Moleskine, which I keep at home
Back (messy):
And my Field Notes, which I carry in my bag
I clearly make a subconscious decision as to whether what I’m writing is deemed “important” or not, before starting the front or back… Although looking through them, some of my decisions seem quite random!
I’m curious – does anyone else do this? Do you set yourself weird criteria? Or do you have different notebooks for different things; to do lists, messy work etc. Let me know!
I have ‘work’ (pattern writing, grading, stuff like that) in the front and to-do lists, phone numbers, addresses, random stuff in the back of all my notebooks. So much like you really!
Good to know I’m not alone!
My system is almost the same. The first page has my name and identification info followed by my main writing ( journaling mainly). But the last two or three pages are always used as pen-ink test pages. The back in general is used for random annotations (lately I’ve used it to follow my expenses).

I used to do that with my notebooks in uni. Actual notes were done in the front, the back was always for writing stories/poems/doodling/playing hangman/etc when bored during class. With my journals now though, the backs are used for indexing
I have way too many notebooks going at one time but I do tend to put things that are more important at the very back. I’ve got a pocket Leuchtturm that I carry in my purse that I prefer because the pages are numbered and you can fill in your own index
Important stuff at the bac – that’s the total opposite of me! I must try a Leuchtturm, I really like the idea of an ongoing index… Thanks for sharing!
